Formerly Scrapbook Design & You® this comprehensive program started with one passionate scrapbook retailer who wanted to show her customers how fun and easy scrapbooking could be. When Joy discovered that traditional scrapbook classes did not teach how to develop a strong scrapbook foundation, she set out to write her own curriculum. Joy's philosophy is "there is no wrong way to scrapbook, but if you know the fundamental theories and techniques, you will be empowered to create any page with your own style."
What began over a decade ago with core scrapbooking classes has now expanded into a full range of craft curriculum. From papercrafting and jewelry making, to needlecrafts and home décor, Spotted Canary School is the source for inspiration and education! Whether you take a class online or at one of our retail partners by a Certified Instructor; everything you need to bring out your creative side is here at Spotted Canary School.
Crafting at the Spotted Canary
"Crafting at the Spotted Canary," hosted by TV personality and crafting expert Joy Macdonell, is a 30-minute PBS series that explores the always creative, sometimes messy techniques adults and children can enjoy while experimenting with contemporary crafts.
Each show highlights three projects, providing viewers with start-to-finish, easy-to-follow guidelines. People often look at beautiful craftwork and wonder, 'How in the world did they do that?' That's the question we'll answer on 'Crafting at the Spotted Canary,'" Macdonell says. "Viewers will quickly realize that everyone makes mistakes - and those mistakes can be wonderful. What we didn't intend to do may be exactly what we need. It's pure self-expression."

Certified Scrapbook Instructors (CSI)
As a result of the program expansion, Joy Macdonell and SCS Education Manager, Shane Hershey, have built a team of Certified Scrapbook Instructors. CSI have mastered the complexities of design and are ready to teach students how to understand design elements in order to create scrapbook pages effortlessly. Becoming a CSI is the perfect opportunity to express and share your creativity with others in your local community. Instructors work hands-on with their students to assist in taking the principles and theories of each lesson and provide practical application. CSI are the go-to educator in regards to papercrafting education at their assigned stores. Participation in multiple in-store events, crops and demonstrations allows CSI the opportunity to establish their position as an expert in the field of papercrafting. Qualified candidates will be notified upon availability of placement opportunity.

Joy Macdonell Education Director/SCS Founder/National Spokesperson
Joy has been taking pictures and crafting with photos since childhood. She has taught scrapbooking since 1996 and is the Education Director and National Spokesperson at EK Success. She hosted "Greetings" from DIY, has crafted on 50+ segments on DIY Scrapbooking, and appeared on Paint, Paper and Craft! Joy currently hosts Crafting at the Spotted Canary on PBS. Joy has had her story featured in Better Homes & Gardens Magazine, interviews and writes regularly for trade magazines, industry websites, podcasts and blogs. Joy's love for scrapbooking is inspired by her husband Duncan and children Ginny and Devin.
Shane Hershey SCS Education Manager
Shane is the Education Manager Spotted Canary School. He holds a BA in Counseling from Ohio Christian University and began working in the Craft and Hobby Industry in 2002 as the Director of Retail Operations for a local scrapbook store and internet commerce site. Shane has been scrapbooking since the early 1990's and has enjoyed industry responsibilities that include: independent retail public relations, marketing, buying and a successful implementation of the SCS curriculum in a retail environment. Shane has had many journalistic experiences and has a true passion for capturing memories through writing. He has written for such publications as Scrapbook Retailer Magazine as well as being the managing editor of the SCS program. Shane takes each step in his career as an opportunity to promote the growth of memory preservation.
